UT Dallas to Host 'Our Bodies, Ourselves' Author

The University of Texas at Dallas Gender Studies program and the Carolyn Lipshy Galerstein Women’s Center are presenting two fall lectures:

• “The Impact of the Media on Women’s Health: Sorting Fact from Fiction,” presented by Judy Norsigian, on Thursday, Oct. 23, from 6 to 7:15 p.m. in the McDermott Suite, MC. 4.4, McDermott Library. The event is followed by a reception.
• “The Sexual Politics of Meat,” presented by Carol Adams, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 17, in the in McDermott Library, room MC 1.204.

Judy Norsigian

Norsigian’s talk will explore how the media report on selected women’s health concerns, from such topics as body image and cosmetic surgery, to tobacco use in women and environmental exposures. Norsigian is the executive director and co-founder of the Boston Women’s Health Book Collective and co-author of Our Bodies, Ourselves.

“Judy Norsigian imparts a woman-affirming message in her presentation,” said Dr. Karen Prager, Gender Studies program head. “We are pleased that Judy is making her first visit to UT Dallas to present this timely topic.”

Adams is both a vegetarian activist and author of the book The Sexual Politics of Meat: A Feminist-Vegetarian Critical Theory. The slide presentation and talk with focus on the historical gender, race and class implications of the meat culture, linking feminist and vegetarian theory.
