This report intends to give the UTD Community a snapshot of international risks, and other issues as reported by the linked media and official sources from the U.S. and other countries.
More health and security information for each country can be found in the travel advisories issued by the governments of the United States, Canada, the UK, New Zealand, and Australia, and the CDC, ECDC, and WHO sites. Not all advise in these sites will apply to US travelers.

Security
- On 26 February, a non-state armed group attacked a village in Inekar circle in the Region of Menaka in Ethiopia (ERCC), at least 10 civilians were killed, and dozens of animals stolen. This is the fifth attack against civilians in this area since January 2023, with around 30 people killed altogether.
- Russian strike on Zaporizhzhia kills at least three people (Euronews on MSN.com). A Russian missile hit a five-story apartment building in Zaporizhzhia in southeastern Ukraine on Thursday, according to police.
Demonstrations
- Greek protesters clash with police after train crash (YAHOO!News). Greek police clashed with around a thousand protesters outside a branch of the country’s rail network a day after at least 38 people were killed when two trains collided head on, north of Athens. Rescuers resumed a search for victims of Greece’s deadliest train crash (Reuters), combing through the buckled and crushed remains of carriages. Disbelief turned to despair and anger after at least 46 people were killed in the disaster.
Infrastructure
- Fire knocks out half of Argentina’s power grid (BBC News on MSN.com). The fire reportedly started in open fields, affecting crucial power lines in the coastal zone and putting a nuclear power station offline. The blackout comes in the middle of a heatwave and drought in Argentina.
Natural Disasters
- On the morning of 2 March (local time) the centre of tropical cyclone JUDY was about 245km south-east of Tanna and 150km south-east of Aneityum in Vanuatu (ERCC). JUDY’s destructive winds uprooted trees and some people were evacuated.
- Heavy rainfall has been affecting six states of the country, particularly Johor State in southern Malaysia over the past few days (ERCC), causing floods and resulting in casualties and damage. Over 26,000 evacuated as floods hit Malaysia again; 1 dead (The Associated Press on MSN.com). Rescuers in boats retrieved families trapped on rooftops and hauled others to safety as villages and towns in parts of Malaysia were submerged in floodwaters, leading to over 26,000 people being evacuated as of Thursday.
- As of 1 March, more than 389,300 people have been affected by the passage of tropical cyclone FREDDY (ERCC) over Madagascar (21-22 February) and Mozambique (24-25 February) that brought heavy rainfall, strong winds and caused widespread floods.
Health
- There is an outbreak of Lassa fever in several states in Nigeria (CDC). Travelers to Nigeria should: Avoid contact with rodents. Avoid food and material that could be contaminated with rodent urine or droppings. Travelers should seek medical care immediately if they develop (during or after travel) fever, chills, headache, fatigue, bleeding, trouble breathing, vomiting, facial swelling or pain in the chest, back and abdomen,. Treatment with an antiviral medicine is most effective during the early stages of illness. Call ahead before going to a healthcare facility and tell your doctor that you’ve been to an area with Lassa fever.
